Bishkek, Nov 16, 2017. /Kabar/. 10 snow leopards and 2 thousand 700 marals (red deer) live on the territory of the Kumtor mine, Deputy Prime Minister Duishenbek Zilaliyev told at a meeting of the parliament today, answering the questions of deputies who are considering amending the Water Code.
MP Elvira Surabaldieva asked if the use of glaciers causes great harm to the environment.
"In case if the use of glaciers will lead to the damage of the environment, appropriate measures will be considered. Ecology is our top priority,” he assured.
Zilaliyev said that at the moment 10 snow leopards and 2 thousand 700 head of sheep live on the territory of the Kumtor mine. This is thanks to a tough guard that does not allow hunting in this area. "Earlier there were only about 750 marals. There were no leopards at all. The number of marals has grown 3-4 times,” the deputy prime minister said.
It should be noted that the government's bill on introducing amendments to the Water Code provides for permission of transferring the Davydov glacier to another location at the same height in order to extract the gold that is under it. As for the Lysy glacier, only 10% of the ice mass will be seizured.
