On 26 February President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov opened the international airport in the administrative centre of Lebap velayat – Turkmenabad.

The official representative of Guinness World Record Book Sheida Subashi-Gemigi attended the opening ceremony and awarded Chairperson of “TürkmenhowaýollaryЭ Dovran Saburov with the World Record Book certificate “for unique architectural design of the airport building, the passenger terminal of which resembles Oguz Khan star from a bird’s eye view”.

According to the state information agency TDH, “specialists of Munich international airport were selected as consultants and experts to assess the features of the new airport”.

The airport facilities occupy the space of over 600 hectares, whereas the passenger terminal has the space of several thousand square meters. The length of the runway is 3800 meters and its width is 60 meters. The airport capacity is 500 passengers an hour.

According to the news outlet, the new airport was built by the privately-owned construction company “Gundogdy”, which is a member of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

However, in February 2013 media outlets reported that Donetsk-based financial and industrial group “Altcom” (Ukraine) launched the construction of the new airport and committed to complete the construction of the new airport complex by February 2016.

It should be emphasized that Turkmen architectural projects are often listed in the Guinness World Records. This last occurred in August 2017. The monument featuring the horse head above the Olympic stadium, which was recognized as the biggest in the world and the Centre of Water Sports built in the Olympic village in the run-up to the Asian Games were included in the Guinness World Records.
