Bishkek, March 13 / Kabar /. Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Zheenbekov received Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) Stanlake Samkange, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa WFP Carlo Scaramella and the WFP Country Director in Kyrgyzstan Ram Sarawanamuttu.
The Kyrgyz Government’s press service reports that, the meeting discussed the results of the WFP World Food Program in Kyrgyzstan on current projects and the main directions of the WFP Country Strategic Plan in Kyrgyzstan for the upcoming 2018-2022.
Zheenbekov thanked WFP for the partnership with the Kyrgyz Government in combating poverty, improving food security and improving the quality of school meals.
The Kyrgyz Prime Minister stressed the effectiveness and prospects of active social protection measures for low-income families, which are now being tested by the joint efforts of WFP and the Ministry of Labor and Social Development of Kyrgyzstan. At the pilot stage, this project demonstrated a steady reduction in poverty in the pilot regions through improved social and economic conditions.
Director of the WFP Policy and Program Management Department Stanlake Samkange said that in recent years the concept of WFP food aid has evolved significantly. Currently, the organization's activities, including in Kyrgyzstan, are aimed at a comprehensive understanding of the long-term needs of vulnerable populations and identifying the most effective ways to meet them.
WFP in Kyrgyzstan is implementing projects "Assistance in the development of the national system of social protection and improving the socio-economic sustainability of communities" and "Optimization of school meals", with a total budget of $ 45 million. Within the framework of the project in 2015-2016, 1,300 different projects were implemented with coverage of more than 50,000 needy families.
