Bishkek, Dec. 28,2017 / Kabar/. Russia believes that its military base near the city of Kant is enough to neutralize threats that may come from outside. Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin told this in an interview to the newspaper Коммерсантъ.
"The presidential elections, in which Sooronbai Zheenbekov won a convincing victory, became an important domestic political event in Kyrgyzstan. For us, continuation of the country’s foreign policy toward alliance with Russia, active participation in integration processes, deepening of good-neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation with all countries of the region are of fundamental importance,” he said.
"As for the issue of the base: Kyrgyzstan is our ally both for the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and for the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Kyrgyzstan is a country close to us. Therefore we always treat the initiatives of the Kyrgyz leadership carefully. However at this stage, we believe, our military base in Kant is quite enough to stop the threats that can come from outside,"Karasin said.
At the territory of Kyrgyzstan there is a united Russian military base, which includes four objects: the airfield of the collective rapid reaction forces of the CSTO in Kant, a test naval base in Issyk-Kul, a communication center in the village of Chaldovar and an autonomous seismic station in the city of Maily Say.
