Astana, Aug. 14, 2017 / Kabar/. Prime Minister Sooronbai Zeenbekov met today with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on the sidelines of a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) in Astana, Kazakhstan.

At the meeting, the sides discussed a wide range of issues related to the state and prospects for the further development of bilateral Kyrgyz-Russian relations in the trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres.

Zheenbekov said that currently there is an active development of cooperation between the two countries, as well as constant political contact at a high state level. In June 2017, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev paid a state visit to Russia, during which a number of important bilateral documents were signed, and prospects for the development of Kyrgyz-Russian strategic cooperation were discussed. The signing of the Federal Law allowing Kyrgyz citizens to use their national driver's licenses in Russia is also aimed at improving bilateral relations.

"Taking into account the existing potential for increasing mutual cooperation in various fields, it is necessary to take steps to increase the trade turnover between the countries, which, over the first half of 2017, between our countries amounted to over $ 500 million. I am sure that by joint efforts we will be able to significantly increase the volume of mutual trade,” Zheenbekov said.

In turn, Medvedev noted the importance of developing Kyrgyz-Russian cooperation both in bilateral format and in the format of the EEU.

"To date, the sides have a clear understanding of the need for constructive dialogue aimed at expanding and deepening the Kyrgyz-Russian cooperation. The main thing is that the joint work meets the national interests of the two countries, contributing to even greater integration, including within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union. Recently, there has been an increase in mutual trade due to new commodity groups produced in the Kyrgyz Republic. This is a positive aspect in the framework of bilateral cooperation, which we want to consolidate," the Russian prime minister said.

Medvedev also stressed that cultural and humanitarian cooperation certainly contributes to strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between the peoples living in Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Prime Minister Zheenbekov is on a two-day working visit to Kazakhstan, where today, August 14, the meeting of the EEU intergovernmental council take place. Also, within the framework of the working visit to Astana, Zheenbekov met with Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Bakhytzhan Sagintaev.
