Bishkek, March 1, 2018 / Kabar /. The Bishkek Mayors Office supported social campaign Open the door to the child! The importance of integrating children with disabilities into the life of society was initiated by UNICEF in the Kyrgyz Republic. About hundred bus stops and billboards are decorated with the thematic appeal banners Open the door to the child!
In addition, booklets with a very accessible language in both Kyrgyz and Russian languages are distributed in each municipal kindergarten. The booklets are in a question-and-answer format encouraging and explaining in detail on how to communicate and play with children with disabilities without excluding them from the society.
The main goal of the campaign is to inform the population about integrating children with disabilities into the society, because out of more than 2 mln small children, 29,000 children are with disabilities. They are one of the most vulnerable categories. Every day they face stigma, often do not leave the house. Fearing discrimination and exclusion, children do not have the opportunity to become full members of society, which limits their opportunities for their development.
"We are grateful to the Bishkek Mayors Office for many years of fruitful cooperation with UNICEF. We hope that thanks to this new joint initiative, more Bishkek residents will open their hearts to children with disabilities and other local governments will follow this sample,” Deputy Head of UNICEF in the Kyrgyz Republic, Munir Mammadzade said.
