Brussels, Feb. 17 / Kabar /. During the meeting of the Kyrgyz President with leaders of European Institutions, they touched upon the situation on Azimzhan Askarov, Foreign Minister Erlan Ablydlaev told reporters on Thursday on the results of the Kyrgyz President Alamzabek Atambayev’s working visit to Belgium.
Abdyldaev said that the topic was not the main one.
"The Kyrgyz President has given clear and understandable explanation for the situation. The European Union side accepted Kyrgyzstan's position with understanding," he said.
Azimzhan Askarov was found guilty of organizing mass riots in Jalal-Abad region of Kyrgyzstan, inciting ethnic hatred, hostage-taking and murder of a policeman during the events of June 2010 and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kyrgyz court.
However, in 2016 the UN Human Rights Committee after appeals of Azimzhan Askarov declared that the convict’s rights have been violated. In this connection, the UN Committee recommended to reconsider Askarov’s case.
